Poetic Realism in Wedding Photography
I have been a photographer for most of my life, and my life has always revolved around photography in one way or another.
My personal story has led me to experience and experiment with different fields of photography, from a pure and naive reportage of my youth to the most fashionable sides of wedding photography, from still life to social reportage.
What I have come to realize is that no matter the subject of my photographs, what I have always been looking for is Poetic Realism: photographs that can go beyond the mere essence of reality to capture feelings, emotions, truths, and the very poetry of life.
Shooting film alongside digital has helped me realize that. When I shoot a photograph, I become the silent observer of the reality that appears in front of me, and I capture it the way I see and I feel it, with all its strength: sometimes humor, sometimes pain, sometimes happiness, always with profound love and empathy.
Photography, to me, has always been about bringing this poetry of life to the surface.
Here you can find a selection of photos that best represent this search of poetic realism in wedding photography.

But what is poetic realism in photography?
Poetic realism in photography is a style that emerged in the 1930s and 1940s in France, and is characterized by its romantic and poetic approach to representing reality. It is often associated with the humanist and politically engaged photography of the time, which aimed to capture the everyday lives and struggles of ordinary people.
The poetic realist photographers sought to create images that were more than just a straightforward representation of reality, but rather evoked a sense of emotion and atmosphere through the use of light, composition, and subject matter.
They often used natural light and soft focus to create a dreamlike or melancholic mood, and focused on capturing the fleeting moments of everyday life, such as a quiet street scene or a group of people gathered in conversation.
While the style has evolved over the years, its legacy can still be seen in contemporary photography that seeks to capture the poetry and beauty of everyday life.
Those photos perfectly depict my idea of poetic realism in wedding photography, but in order to have a complete vision of what I look for on a wedding day, watching some complete weddings is definitely important.
Here, you can find some of my most representative works, divided into three categories: weddings in Venice, my home; around Italy, my country, and around the world as well.
"Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected"
- Robert Frank
